Big Day In
As term two comes to an end we are planning a Big Day In for the children from Waimakariri and Ōtākaro on Wednesday 27 June. This will be a great day with lots of fun activities. Children are invited to wear wild and wacky (or sensible!) mufti for the day. We encourage the children to also incorporate pink into their outfit to support Olivia, Mille and Matilda’s term one/two inquiry raising awareness of breast cancer. A gold coin donation for the Cancer Society is invited. We will also be screening two movies - children will opt into the one they would most like to watch. The choices are Wonder or Cool Kids Camp. Both of these movies carry a PG rating. If you prefer for your child to not watch either movie please let your Home Base teacher know. The day will also involve an Escape the School challenge where the children work in teams to solve problems and escape the room they are in! We will provide pizza and chips for lunch on this day. Kind regards Ōtākaro and Waimakariri teachers This Friday (May 18th) winter sport begins for those selected in teams for football, hockey, netball and rugby. Draws for each week can be accessed using this link, the St Albans School Sports Blog or by getting the Primary Sports Canterbury app on your phone. I would strongly encourage parents to get this app if you are planning to watch some of your child's games. These links also allow you to access ground maps and rules.
Our teams will be playing in the following locations: Football and Hockey - Nunweek Park Netball and Rugby - South Hagley Park Uniforms will be handed out before Friday, including a St Albans School jacket. These jackets must only be worn on Friday afternoons while at sports games. Entertainment books for 2018 - 2019 are now out. Consider buying your new one through our PTA. $14, of each book sold, goes towards the development of our new playground! If you are new to Entertainment Books here is a link to further information: https://www.entertainmentbook.co.nz
It's that super fun time of the term again. Scholastic Lucky Book Club time.
Please can we have all orders in by : TUESDAY 22nd MAY. Kia ora koutou,
As you are aware we will be farewelling Rachel Kelly this Friday from Ōtākaro hub and St Albans. Rachel begins her new role at Pegasus School next Monday. We are excited for her as she will have a short commute to work and be able to spend more time with her family as she resides in Pegasus. The hub children have decided they would like to have a shared lunch on Friday to say goodbye. We would appreciate if all year 6 children bring along a plate of food. As this is a shared lunch would be grateful if your whānau could contribute something that is a lunch item. We do have an oven in the hub if food needs reheating. The next time we have a hub shared lunch we will ask the year 5 children to contribute food. Please email me if you have any questions, Renee If you have received an email regarding this trip you will need to click on this notice to find out about the postbox trip.
If you have any spare newspaper and/or magazines at home that you are happy to donate for our visual arts programme please bring them into the hub.
After a discussion with the park ranger from Spencer Park, we have made a decision to change the venue and activity of our big day out. The downpours over the past week have made the grounds at Spencer Park rather mucky. Therefore we are now going to -
Margaret Mahy Playground & City Putt Mini Golf Apart from the venue everything else remains the same. Children will travel either by bus or private vehicle. They will dress in mufti, bring a packed lunch, drink bottle with water and a jacket (incase it rains). Throughout the day they will have fun in the playground and play a round of mini golf with a small group. They have selected people to play with and will be accompanied by an adult. To enable us to have 180 children play mini golf some children will depart school a little bit earlier and others will arrive back a little bit later. School will continue to be from 9am - 3pm tomorrow. For those parents who have offered to be an adult help, please be at school by 9:20pm. Carmen or Renée will let you know if your group is leaving earlier or arriving back at school later. Hi, If you have been emailed regarding this trip, your child will be attending on Tuesday.
Please return permission slips and pay $3 to the office for those students doing swimming sports as soon as possible.
We've checked the 10 day weather forecast and the sun is predicted to shine on Thursday 1st March. Therefore we have put this in our diaries for our new date for our Spencer Park trip!
We still require adults helpers from 9:30am - 2pm to assist with our 1:6 ratio for EOTC events. Many thanks to those of you who offered to help today. If you are still able to assist or you are now able to help please email Renée. As we had already purchased the bread and sausages, we had our sausage sizzle lunch today and won't be having it on Thursday 1st March. We are happy for the children to bring some picnic food to share amongst their friends. Children can wear mufti. Many thanks in advance, Ōtākaro Hub Due to bad weather our trip to Spencer Park will not go ahead today. Children are still able to wear mufti and we will have a sausage sizzle lunch back at school. We will look into the possibility of arranging another day at Spencer Park in the upcoming weeks.
KIA ORA KOUTOU Welcome to the 2018 school year. It has been lovely to see some familiar and new faces in our hub over the past couple of days. All three classes in our hub are a combination of Year 5 and Year 6 children. Each class has an equal mix of abilities and will start with around 30 students. For the first couple of weeks we will be working mainly in our home bases. Our focus will be getting to know one another, establishing and reconnecting our relationships. From here we will be moving across the hub for reading and mathematics. Children will be grouped based on social needs and academic ability. We always explain to the children these groups are not set in concrete; just like groups in a class taught by one teacher. Some of the reasons groups may change could be to do with interests, passion projects, strengths and areas of next steps in their learning. But who do I contact? Your child’s home base teacher is still the first port of call. Even if your child is not being taught by their home base teacher for a particular subject they will have an understanding of learning journey and where they are heading. They can always direct you to another staff member if needed. STAFFING Ōtākaro 1 Renée Kake Ōtākaro 2 Rachel Kelly (Monday, Tuesday & Fridays) & Jodi Archbold (Wednesdays & Thursdays) Ōtākaro 3 Sam Pelham Teacher Aides Kylie Ellis & Wendy Blackmun We welcome back Ros Tippen to Ōtākaro hub. Ros will be providing Renee’s leadership release on Thursdays. Olivia Hanson will continue in her role of releasing Sam. OUR BIG BACKYARD Our Big Backyard is the school wide inquiry theme for the first part of the year. We aim to give students the opportunity to explore the way children live in our community and in the wider New Zealand. We will be looking at organisations in the country that help others. We will encourage the children to ‘be the change they want to see in the world’ through critically thinking, questioning and researching. HOME FUN & READING DAILY The expectations are to complete reading, basic facts and spelling each day. Children read a personal book each night (suggested 20 minutes). Basic facts need to be practised by children also. From week 3 their sounds alive lists will be shared to their google account. Even if their book is left at school they will be able to have access to their words via the internet at home. A home fun sheet will be sent home each week except for the last week of this term. From time to time we hear, “there was no home fun this week.” This is usually not the case as our school sets home fun every week except for the first and last week of term. Children are expected to bring their own book to school each day. The first ten minutes of our reading lessons consists of personal reading. The book they bring along should be able to sustain them for this time and we encourage children to be reading chapter books suited to their level. The following lists are always full of great reads and a number of these books can be found at our school and local libraries https://www.whitcoulls.co.nz/top-listings/kids-top-50 www.noted.co.nz/culture/books/the-50-best-books-for-kids-in-2017 STUDENT COUNCIL Children wanting to be a part of the student council need to prepare a short speech to be presented in front of their home base. From here the students will vote for who they think are the most suitable children for this role. Each home base has two children representing them on the student council. The children have decided that speeches will be presented on Thursday 15th February. SPORT Most terms we compete in a local sports competition on a Friday afternoon (12:45 - 3pm). This term’s sports are rippa rugby, kiwi volley, futsal, softball and cricket. All sports travel to Hagley via bus with the exception of cricket. Cricket is either held at St Albans or the opposition’s school. Children will soon be trialling for these teams. It is very important that they listen carefully to the daily notices for information regarding sports. Those who do not participate in the teams competition will participate in a Sports programme at school. If you are interested in coaching any of the summer sports team or would like to know more please contact Jodi or email [email protected] CAMP This year all Year 5/6 classes will be having their annual camp in Hanmer Springs during Term 4. More information will be sent home soon about dates and costs. AQUATICS We will continue to make use of our school pool as a part of our aquatics programme. A copy of our timetable is on the home page and notices page of our blog. Next week we will be participating in the Aquagym programme. Water activities are not covered by your blanket permission agreement. A separate permission form and information has be sent home with your child and these need to be returned a.s.a.p. MANAGING SELF One of the key competencies in our curriculum is managing self. This plays a pivotal role in the senior area of the school. In Year 5/6 we are assisting with transitioning your child to intermediate. There are a number of ways your child can develop these skills such as:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION The school app, website and our hub blog are your first ports of call to find all important information. Our blog is updated regularly and we encourage all to check this www.otakaro2018.weebly.com BYOD We use devices to support the learning programmes we offer at school each day. We would appreciate those children who have access to a device and parental permission to bring it to school each day. We support any device although our preferred devices are iPads (ideally with bluetooth keyboards). Devices must be charged at home please. Children who wish to bring a device to school need to complete a BYOD permission form. We have a robust filtering system that ensures we are keeping our children safe while they are using devices at school. Our Board of Trustees continues to provide devices for those children unable to bring along their own. If you have any questions regarding BYOD please feel free to chat to Sam. Big Day Out We are currently in the process of organising our big day out and we will be placing more information on our blog shortly. We will be traveling to and from Spencer Park. We require at least four adult helpers from each home base to provide transport along with supervision. If you are available on Tuesday 20th February from 9:30am - 2:30pm please email Renée. Learning Information Evening Our learning information evening will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 7th February at 6:30pm, and we invite all to attend. We are all extremely excited about what 2018 has to offer for your child. As always feel free to pop in, email or call; Renée [email protected] Rachel [email protected] Jodi [email protected] Sam [email protected] Hi everyone.
Welcome to the beginning of the new school year. This is a heads up on Year 5/6 sport for Term 1. Here are some important points: - Next week there will be sports trials for the following sports: girls cricket, futsal, teeball, rippa rugby and kiwi volleyball. - Children will be allowed to trial for a maximum of two sports. - There will be two teams selected for most sports. A few may only have one. - Games take place on a Friday afternoon. - There will be transport costs for those selected in all teams except girls cricket. We will not be able to send all teams to Friday sport without parent volunteers to coach. This involves coming to games on Friday afternoons this term and, if possible, taking some lunch time practices. If you are interested in coaching a team, please reply to this email to let me know. Obviously, for most of you this would be dependent on your child making a team, however, it would be great to know in advance if you would be willing to coach. More specific information about trials will be shared with the children this week. Thanks, Jodi Archbold St Albans School Sports Coordinator E: [email protected] P: 0274766870 |
