To celebrate Kairu turning 10 today we celebrated his birthday by having his Mum come in and talk to us about ethical chocolate and how we can be sure to be buying chocolate that is giving cocoa farmers and chocolate makers a fair wage. She talked about Fair Trade and the logos we can look for on products when we are shopping.
Then we got to sample some delicious chocolate! We also got to have a got chocolate with a glittery marshmallow that Lauren made for us. It was delicious! Happy Birthday Kairu. This week in maths Jodi and Sam’s classes have been learning about directions, reading and using maps and coordinate points. We have had fun playing games like Captain’s Coming and giving a buddy directions from one side of the room to the other - we are really good at using compass points and left/right in our instructions. We have created some great pictures using coordinates and today we used the BeeBots - these were so much fun. We tried to navigate the BeeBot through a maze by coding directions into it. This week during Topic we have continued exploring the rock cycle. We used chocolate buttons to create delicious models of different types of rocks. We began by filing a few chocolate buttons into sediment - we acted as weathering and erosion when we did this. Then we squeezed these pieces of sediment together to act as the compression forces that help create sedimentary rock. We used different types of chocolate so we could see the layers of sediment in our rocks. Next we broke some more chocolate buttons into small pieces. We wrapped these carefully in some tinfoil. We had to be careful to avoid getting any holes in the foil. We then sat this on top of some very hot water. We waited for this to melt the chocolate. This helped us to form igneous rock. The hot water acted like the magma and lava that heats the rock to liquid form - it cooled quickly and was easy to peel away from the foil - it was quite bumpy and had interesting shapes. Our final edible rock was metamorphic. We made this be wrapping some small pieces of chocolate in foil and sitting it above some cooler water. This softened the chocolate. We then used our fingers to act as the pressure that the earth’s tech tonic plates provide. This helped us to form our metamorphic rock. Finally we got to eat our rocks! This was a really fun lesson and also a great way to see the rock cycle in action. I was especially impressed with the way the children were able to verbalise the rock cycle and use the correct scientific language. During topic this week we have learned that a scientist who studies rocks is called a geologist. We also discovered there are three types of rocks - igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. We spent time practicing being like a geologist - we used magnifying glasses to examine and explore rocks that the children brought along from home. We looked for signs that would help us identify each rock. We discovered that some rocks are easy to classify but some are really hard. We also learned about the Rock Cycle. We drew our own rock cycle and labelled our diagram like scientists do. Our new topic is called Earth Science.
We are exploring being scientists and learning about what the earth is made up of. During our first lesson the tamariki used solo hexagons to record their ideas about what they think Earth Science might be about. They linked similar ideas together by placing the hexagons together. The tamariki in O3 have been working hard to write narrative stories that have
We have looked closely at the features of a bedtime story and thought about the structure and language features they use. We watched some clips from Pete’s Dragons to start our thinking - before long our imaginations were running wild. We have published these stories by filming ourselves reading the story. We will share our finished story with our younger buddies next week. O3 worked hard on their ANZAC letters and then created greenscreen movies to publish them. It's a long process with lots and lots of learning behind it. Our movies are coming together - we will keep posting them as they are finished. The first part of this task was to write letters that helped the reader empathise with the soldier/child during the war. The children worked hard to write descriptive letters that captured the mood of wartime living. They then used the green screen to record each other reading their letters before finding suitable background photos. FInally the greenscreen clips were imported into iMovie where sound effects and sound tracks were added. It is a huge process that takes a lot of effort and patience. The skills being developed include using the camera effectively, figuring out how to add sound effects - and not over doing them, cropping/clipping/splitting/duplicating clips, sourcing and adding background images along with a lot of patience and perseverance! Mia, Aoife and Lily looked into Fill their Lunchbox as their inquiry agency.
They discovered lots of great information which they have had published in the school newsletter. Can you help them support Fill their Lunchbox? Fill Their Lunchbox What They do… Fill their lunchbox sells lunches to us, then donates TWO healthy lunches to disadvantaged children at schools. Who They are… Fill their lunchbox are some kind people that makes lunches to children that have not got a healthy lunch or not got anything to eat. They also started in February 2015 Jarod and Tane looked at Fill their Lunchbox for their inquiry.
They found out lots of great information. This is their summary. Fill their lunchbox is an agency that helps children to provide lunches if their parents can’t provide them. They started in 2015 and have blossomed in the past few years. The lunches are healthy and nutritious. Fill their lunchbox provide to children in low decile schools such as Lincoln School. The lunches are 15$ and we would love it if you could support them going to there website and purchasing lunchboxes on their website. Photos Our Big Backyard

Fill their lunchbox is a charity that is unlike most others. Instead of donating hey you buy a lunch and they give two other lunches to children who can’t afford lunches or have really unhealthy lunches. Fill their lunchbox has healthy food for children so they can grow to be healthy. Fill their lunchbox is a small charity that is only in New Zealand and they are hoping to become worldwide. At fill their lunchbox they were smart to add a thing that you can donate without getting the lunch.here is a list of schools that they give their lunches to
New Zealand get proper lunches. Go to fill their lunchbox.co.nz on Friday we are selling popcorn for 50cents at the cafe and Nate is selling cookies for $1at ca fe Harvey and Harry are doing an enquiry about SPCA. We contacted the SPCA to find out how we could help. it was suggested that they always need food and as there are lots of kittens at the moment toys would be great. We have chosen to make Poms Poms. If anyone has spare wool and Cat food to donate to help our cause please bring to Harry or Harvey as soon as possible
We hope all the Mums had a wonderful Mother’s Day and enjoyed the poems and word walls the children created for you.

This week O3 are using Pete’s Dragon as the inspiration for our narrative writing. Today we learned about our writing task - it will take us a week or two to complete our writing so today we explored the ideas we might include. We are aiming to write a bedtime story for our younger buddy and plan to choose our own creative way to publish our story ready to share with our buddy later this term. We are learning to use creative, descriptive language to paint a picture for the reader (to show rather than tell). We are also thinking about the structure of our text and how we can keep our ideas succinct so the reader stays interested. We began today by watching this clip - if you open it on the YouTube app on an iPad you can explore the clip in 360degree wonder. We loved it! It was so much fun hearing the children gasp in excitement as they discovered new and exciting parts of the forest and by wandering our classroom holding the iPads they were also wondering through a magical forest! So much awe and language in such a short time! Hello I am Ava, some of my friends and I did an inquiry on Plunket. We have made a big poster full of information. We have got most of our information from the email we sent to my mum’s friend who is a plunket nurse, and got a HUGE reply! We are going to gather toys and warm blankets etc and arrange a time to go and donate them to plunket.
By Ava Hello I’m Mannat and I am one of Ava’s friends that is doing the plunket inquiry with her and along with another friend.I also made a poste. On my poster I have simple information . If you would like to donate go to www.plunket.org.nz that’s all I have bye. Hello I’m Jessica another one of Ava’s friends and we are working on the agency plunket. Plunket is an organisation where you can donate picture books, woollen clothes and scarves, and also soft toys, kids can only go to plunket if they are under 5 years old,if you would like to donate go to www.plunket.org.nz that’s all bye. SPCA
We chose the SPCA as our agency. We thought that we should make a difference somehow. We planned out our ideas and kept the ones we needed. Soon we were onto our poster - we created it and stuck on facts, now all we had to do was make a difference. We emailed the SPCA and soon we were booked in on Friday to visit and learn more about what they do. We got greeted and shown around - there were animals like rabbits, dogs, cats, kittens we got to pat most the animals but sadly not the dogs. We have achieved our goal and made a difference because we also donated some cat and dog food to the SPCA. We also made a poster and gave it to them. Our PTA does an amazing job at supporting our school.
Please support the fundraising efforts they provide - we all benefit from the great work the PTA do. Entertainment books for 2018 - 2019 are now out. Consider buying your new one through our PTA. $14, of each book sold, goes towards the development of our new playground! If you are new to Entertainment Books here is a link to further information: https://www.entertainmentbook.co.nz We felt so incredibly proud of all of the children who ran in the cross country today. We loved the way you set yourself goals and strived to achieve these. We loved the wonderful sporting attitudes and encouragement you gave to others. Everyone gave the day their very best effort, huge congratulations to those children who represent our school at the zone event coming up soon. We are now finished our ANZAC Art and it looks great. Pop into our hub to see our excellent art work.
We have so loved having Rachel work in our hub over the last two years. Rachel is one of the most caring teachers you could wish for and we are very sad to see her go however we know she will love working in a school close to home.
We had a special shared lunch to celebrate the wonderful learning and teaching she has shared with us and to wish her well at her new school We often talk about having a growth mindset - being open to new things and being willing to give things our very best effort even when they might feel hard or scary. During assembly we will look at this clip and reflect on our own growth mindset. |
